Quick recap

Renée Ballard was exiled to the Hollywood Division night shift, the "late show," after reporting her boss, Lt. Robert Olivas, for harassment. There, cases usually get handed to the day shift before they're done. In one night, she catches two she won't let go: the brutal beating of a trans woman and a nightclub shooting that leaves five dead. Against orders, Ballard works both, and one of them gets too close to the police itself. She uses old-school detective work and forensics to connect the pieces. She solves both cases but pays for it: she becomes the target of the criminal she was hunting and has to fight her way out alive.
