Harry Bosch

The LAPD homicide detective

Harry Bosch is a Los Angeles homicide detective who lives by one rule: everybody counts or nobody counts. Stubborn, wary of the brass and a jazz lover, he carries his mother's unsolved murder and the job of raising his daughter, Maddie. Titus Welliver plays him in Bosch, Bosch: Legacy and Ballard.

Bosch – Season 1

Bones in the hills

Bosch opens the series fighting on two fronts. In court, he's facing a civil suit over a suspect he shot in self-defense. On the street, he takes the case of Arthur Delacroix, a 12-year-old whose bones surface in the Hollywood Hills.

Serial killer Raynard Waits claims the murder and starts toying with Bosch. Waits escapes, and Bosch ends up killing him when he raises a gun that turns out to be empty. The jury sides with the suspect's widow but sets damages at one dollar. The boy, Bosch learns, was killed over a skateboard.

Bosch – Season 2

Marjorie Lowe

Bosch's oldest wound is his mother, Marjorie Lowe, murdered when he was a boy. After cases that take him to Las Vegas and into a ring of dirty cops, he gets a lead: a witness names Fox Mitchell, one of her clients, as the likely killer.

Mitchell has already died of cancer. Bosch has no one to arrest, and the case stays open inside him.

Bosch – Season 4

Eleanor and the truth

Bosch becomes a suspect in the death of Ed Gunn, a man who fits his mother's killer's profile, and at the end of S3 he learns the real name: Bradley Walker. In S4, while leading the task force on lawyer Howard Elias's murder, he loses his ex-wife, Eleanor Wish, gunned down right after lunch with him.

Their daughter, Maddie, has been living with her father since S3. And Walker ends up confessing to Marjorie Lowe's murder, closing a lifelong search.

Bosch – Season 7

The badge on the desk

In S5, an old conviction is challenged and Bosch is accused of planting evidence. Honey Chandler, who once fought him in court, becomes his lawyer. In S6 he chases a missing load of cesium and reopens the Daisy Clayton case.

In S7, a New Year's Eve 2019 arson fire kills a 10-year-old girl, and Bosch goes head to head with people who want the case buried. Fed up with the system, he turns in his badge in the last episode.

Bosch: Legacy – Season 2

Private eye

Off the LAPD, Bosch goes private. He works for billionaire Whitney Vance and helps Chandler go after Carl Rogers, while Maddie joins the force. At the end of Bosch: Legacy S1, he finds his daughter's apartment empty, with the window screen sliced.

Maddie has been taken by Kurt Dockweiler. Bosch and Chandler find her, but the rescue leaves scars. In the last episode of S2, Maddie answers her father's phone and hears Preston Borders say he "took care of it," a sign that Bosch had a hand in Dockweiler's death.

Ballard – Season 1

Alongside Ballard

In Bosch: Legacy S3, Bosch digs into the Gallagher family's disappearance and becomes a target of both the FBI and the LAPD. He solves the case, and McShane, the man he was hunting, dies in Mexico. Late in the season he crosses paths with Detective Renée Ballard.

In Ballard, Bosch turns up again as an ally. One of her cases ties into Laura Wilson's 2008 murder, which Bosch worked, and in episode 7 the two meet at a motel.

In comics and books

In Michael Connelly's books his full name is Hieronymus Bosch, like the painter, and Mickey Haller is his half-brother. The show moved Bosch's military past to the Gulf War and Afghanistan. Quinn Welliver, Titus's son, plays teenage Bosch in flashbacks.
