Luce Price arrives at Sword & Cross reform school in Savannah, Georgia, blamed for the fire that killed a boy named Trevor. At school, Cam moves in on her, while Daniel Grigori, whom she's sure she knows, does everything he can to avoid her. A fire in the library kills her classmate Todd. Daniel finally tells her the truth: many of the students are fallen angels, he's doomed to love Luce, and she dies every time they get close. Teacher Sophia, secretly part of a radical heavenly sect, kills Penn and tries to kill Luce, but Daniel and the others stop her. In the end, Luce is taken somewhere safe, with no idea what comes next.

What changed on screen
ChangeDaniel's graphic novel
In the movie, Daniel draws a graphic novel about a cursed couple, and that's how he starts telling Luce the truth. The book has nothing like it.
In the book, Daniel knows from the start who he is and what ties them together. In the series, he has to piece his own past back together, so the two investigate side by side.
The series turns the reform school into a place of experiments, with wiped memories, drones and medical procedures. Dr. Howson and Miriam, both created for the show, run it.
On the show, Penn gets a side plot tied to the school's secrets and to her father, who turns up looking for her. In the book, she's the friend who helps Luce.
No spoilersThe easter eggs give away parts of the title. They open once you mark it as seen.
