Richard Sharpe

The rifleman up from the ranks

Richard Sharpe was born poor in London, joined the army as a private and became an officer through bravery, a rare thing in the British army of the day. He leads a squad of 95th riflemen in the wars against Napoleon. Other officers look down on his origins, and the men follow him because he fights beside them.

Sharpe's Rifles

Lieutenant by a stroke of luck

In 1809, in Portugal, Sergeant Sharpe saves Sir Arthur Wellesley from French horsemen and is made a lieutenant on the spot. He's handed a squad of riflemen who won't accept an officer from the ranks, and he has to fight, fists included with Harper, to earn their respect. By the end of the mission with Spanish major Vivar and partisan Teresa, the men follow him.
