Quick recap

The South Essex is out of men, and London refuses to send more. Sharpe and Harper go to England to find out why. The second battalion's barracks are nearly empty, and recruits vanish on the way. After surviving two assassins, Sharpe and Harper enlist under fake names and land in a secret training camp, where they uncover the scam: Simmerson, Colonel Girdwood and War Secretary Lord Fenner are selling trained recruits to other regiments. With help from Jane Gibbons, Simmerson's niece, and Lady Anne, Fenner's mistress, Sharpe exposes the scheme before the Prince Regent, takes the men to war and marries Jane.
