Quick recap

1812. The British army gets ready to storm Badajoz, one of Spain's toughest fortresses. Sharpe learns that Teresa has had his daughter, Antonia, and that both are inside the city. At the same time he loses his captaincy, and Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill joins the company: the man who once had him flogged and who swore to kill him. Hakeswill frames Harper, who gets busted down. To win back his rank, Sharpe wants to join the volunteers for the first assault on the breaches. The night of the attack is a slaughter. Sharpe fights his way to Teresa's house and finds Hakeswill there. Mother and daughter make it, but Hakeswill escapes.
