Claire Fraser

In 1945, Claire and Frank try to rekindle their marriage after the war with a trip to Inverness. When she touches a stone at Craigh na Dun, she wakes up in 1743. The MacKenzies take her to Castle Leoch, where she's a healer and a prisoner at the same time. To escape Black Jack Randall, she marries Jamie Fraser.

After a witch trial alongside Geillis Duncan, Claire gets the chance to go back to 1945 and chooses to stay. She helps get Jamie out of Wentworth prison and nurses him at an abbey in France, where she tells him she's pregnant.

In Paris, Claire works at a charity hospital while she and Jamie try to sabotage Charles Stuart's rising. She loses their daughter, Faith. Back in Scotland, she tends the Jacobite army's wounded. On the eve of Culloden, Jamie makes her go back through the stones, pregnant. She returns to Frank in 1948. Twenty years later, now a widow, she takes Brianna to Inverness and learns that Jamie survived the battle.

In Boston, Claire raises Brianna, earns her medical degree and lives in a cold marriage with Frank until his death. With Roger's help, she tracks Jamie to Edinburgh and goes back through the stones. The reunion brings surprises, like Laoghaire, and a trip to the Caribbean after young Ian, where Claire faces Geillis one last time.

In North Carolina, Claire helps found Fraser's Ridge and becomes the area's doctor. Brianna turns up in the past, and Claire tries to hold the family together through misunderstandings and Roger's rescue. Later she tests remedies from the future and watches the war against the Regulators take Murtagh. At the end of S5, Lionel Brown and his men kidnap her, and Jamie rescues her.

Shaken, Claire uses ether to sleep. When Malva Christie is found dead, she's accused and jailed. She walks free after Tom Christie confesses and follows Jamie to war. In Philadelphia, arrested as a spy and with Jamie reported dead at sea, she agrees to marry Lord John to escape the gallows. Jamie comes back, and at Monmouth Claire is shot and nearly dies.

Back on the Ridge with the family, Claire lives with the date of Kings Mountain, which Jamie read in Frank's book. She saves a baby thought stillborn, tells Fanny the truth about Faith and, at the end, joins the battle to find Jamie. He dies in her arms. The epilogue shows a white-haired Claire beside Jamie, in a scene the show leaves open.

In Diana Gabaldon's books, Claire has narrated the story in first person since Outlander (1991). On the show she's played by Caitríona Balfe, who won the Saturn Award for best actress more than once for the role.
