Quick recap
Ten 50-minute cases, nearly all from short stories, set up the show's world: mid-1930s London, the Art Deco flat at Whitehaven Mansions, secretary Miss Lemon, Poirot's friend Captain Hastings and Inspector Japp of Scotland Yard. Poirot starts by hunting a missing cook in The Adventure of the Clapham Cook, then takes on a death on Guy Fawkes night in Murder in the Mews, a child kidnapping, a killing at sea and the theft of military plans. Each episode closes its own case, and the season ends with The Dream, about a millionaire who dreams of his own suicide.

Behind the scenesRecommended by Christie's family
Agatha Christie's family suggested David Suchet after seeing him as Blott in Blott on the Landscape.
Suchet read every novel and short story and copied out each description of the detective. He ended up with 93 notes that shaped Poirot's voice and quick, mincing walk.
