Poirot's first story collection gathers short cases narrated by Hastings from the days when the two shared rooms in London. There's a bit of everything: a diamond under threat of theft, a flat too cheap to be true, a cursed Egyptian tomb, a prime minister kidnapped on the eve of a peace conference and a millionaire who vanishes from a bank. Japp shows up often, usually a step behind. The stories are light and quick, a good way to meet Poirot's way of thinking, his vanity and Hastings's patience. The British edition has 11 stories; the American one has 14.
