Jamie Fraser

Claire meets Jamie wounded and treats his shoulder. Wanted by the English and scarred by Black Jack Randall's lash, he's hiding out among the MacKenzies. He marries Claire to protect her, takes her to Lallybroch and reunites with his sister, Jenny. Betrayed and imprisoned at Wentworth, he suffers at Randall's hands. Once rescued, he slowly recovers at an abbey in France.

In Paris, Jamie works his way into Charles Stuart's circle to undermine the rising. He breaks a promise to Claire by dueling Randall, and they lose their daughter, Faith. In Scotland, he fights for the Jacobites and wins at Prestonpans, but watches the army march toward Culloden. Before the battle, he sends a pregnant Claire back to the future.

Jamie survives Culloden and spends years hiding near Lallybroch. He turns himself in, goes to Ardsmuir prison and becomes friends with Lord John Grey. At Helwater he fathers a son, William, and has to leave him behind. He becomes a printer and smuggler in Edinburgh, where Claire finds him again. The two head to the Caribbean after his nephew Ian and are shipwrecked on the coast of Georgia.

In North Carolina, Jamie accepts land from Governor Tryon and founds Fraser's Ridge. He meets Brianna, the daughter he never got to watch grow up, and through a misunderstanding hands Roger over to the Mohawk before going to rescue him. Tryon sets him on the Regulators, and the mission ends with his godfather, Murtagh, dying at Alamance. Later, Jamie rescues Claire from Lionel Brown.

Malva Christie accuses Jamie of fathering her child, and the young woman's death lands Claire in jail. Once Claire is free, Jamie joins the war on the American side, from Ticonderoga to Saratoga. Reported dead in a shipwreck, he turns up in Philadelphia to find Claire married to Lord John. William learns Jamie is his father. At Monmouth, Jamie nearly loses Claire.

Jamie reads in Frank's book that he'll die at Kings Mountain. He tries to look after the Ridge, faces down Cunningham's Loyalists and makes peace with William. Before the battle, he writes his will and rides out with Roger, Ian and the militia. At Kings Mountain, Ferguson shoots him, and Jamie dies in Claire's arms. The epilogue leaves one last image of him open.

Diana Gabaldon took Jamie's name from Jamie McCrimmon, a 1745 Scot from Doctor Who. Sam Heughan was the first cast member announced, in July 2013, and played the role for all 8 seasons.
