In One Battle After Another, Pat and Perfidia are lovers inside the French 75, a far-left militant group that hits detention centers and other government targets. Their raids put them on the radar of military officer Lockjaw, who becomes obsessed with Perfidia.
Perfidia has a daughter, Charlene, but leaves the family to keep fighting and ends up arrested. Pat runs with the baby, and the two start over under new names: Bob and Willa Ferguson.
Sixteen years later, Bob is a paranoid, permanently stoned recluse who barely leaves the house in a sanctuary city. Willa has grown up sharp and self-reliant, and she looks after herself better than her dad does. The quiet ends when Lockjaw, now a colonel and a hard-line anti-immigration figure, starts digging into the past again. He has personal reasons to find Willa, and he sends troops into town. Bob, rusty and unable to remember the old network's passwords, has to go after his daughter.
Inspired by Thomas Pynchon's 1990 novel Vineland
