It Was Just an Accident starts on a dark road in Iran. A man with a prosthetic leg is driving at night with his wife and daughter when he hits a dog. The car needs fixing, so the family pulls into a garage.
Inside works Vahid, an ethnic Azerbaijani mechanic. He never sees the customer's face, but he hears the squeak of the prosthesis. He knows that sound. Vahid is sure this is Eghbal, the jailer nicknamed "Peg Leg" who tortured political prisoners.
The next day, Vahid kidnaps the man and drives him out to the desert. But the guy swears he is not who Vahid thinks he is, and doubt creeps in. To be certain, Vahid goes looking for other victims around the city: Shiva, a photographer shooting a wedding, the bride herself, Goli, and later Hamid, Shiva's former partner. Each of them remembers Eghbal in a different way. None of them ever saw his face. And the van keeps filling up with people carrying anger, fear and one hard question: what do they do with this man?
