Marty Supreme opens in New York City in 1952. Marty Mauser sells shoes at his uncle Murray's store, but his mind is somewhere else: table tennis. He plays professionally and is sure he was born to be the best in the world.
The plan is to win the British Open and, along the way, get America to care about a sport almost nobody there takes seriously. In the meantime he hustles orange "Marty Supreme" novelty balls with his own name printed on them.
Marty talks fast, promises big and rarely thinks about consequences. He is having an affair with Rachel, a married childhood friend, and he gets by on small cons and bets.
The immediate problem is money. He needs $700 to get to London, and his uncle won't front it. Marty doesn't take no for an answer, so he handles it his way: he robs the store's vault. From there, every shortcut costs him more.
Loosely inspired by table tennis player Marty Reisman
