Blue Moon takes place over a single night: March 31, 1943, opening night of Oklahoma! on Broadway. The musical is by Richard Rodgers, but for the first time without his longtime partner, lyricist Lorenz Hart. The two had written dozens of famous songs together, including the one that gives the film its title.
Hart walks out of the theater before the end and heads to Sardi's, the restaurant where Broadway celebrates its openings. He has only recently gotten sober, talks nonstop and turns the bar into a stage. Bartender Eddie and pianist Morty are his loyal audience.
Hart is waiting for someone. He is smitten with Elizabeth Weiland, a young Yale art student, and believes tonight may be the night he wins her over. Rodgers also turns up at Sardi's, and the two old partners end up talking about what comes next. Richard Linklater shoots almost everything on one set, with fast, joke-filled dialogue. Ethan Hawke plays Hart.
Inspired by the letters Elizabeth Weiland wrote to lyricist Lorenz Hart
