Quick recap

Nine years later, the Soviet ship Leonov is set to reach Discovery first, but only the Americans know how to bring HAL back. Heywood Floyd signs on with engineer Curnow and Dr. Chandra, HAL's creator. A probe sent to Europa is wiped out by a burst of energy. Chandra revives HAL and finds the cause of his breakdown: an order to hide the mission's purpose from the crew, signed by Floyd. Back home, the US and USSR reach the brink of war. Bowman appears to Floyd and warns that they have to leave. Monoliths multiply across Jupiter, and HAL agrees to stay behind and beam a message to Earth. Jupiter becomes a star, the Cold War backs off and a monolith watches over Europa's new jungle.
