Quick recap

In prehistory, hominins driven from their water hole find a black monolith, learn to use bones as weapons and win the water back. Millions of years later, Dr. Heywood Floyd sees a monolith buried near the Moon's Tycho crater, and it lets out a piercing signal. Eighteen months on, Discovery One heads for Jupiter with Bowman, Poole, three hibernating crew and the HAL 9000 computer. HAL makes a mistake, realizes he's about to be shut down, and kills Poole and the sleepers. Bowman disconnects HAL's memory and learns the mission's secret purpose. At Jupiter, another monolith pulls him through a tunnel of light into a strange room, where he ages and is reborn as the Star Child.
