Full story

In 1967, a pregnant woman is attacked by a vampire and goes into labor at the hospital. She seems to die, but the baby survives. Thirty years later, that baby is Blade, half human and half vampire, able to walk in sunlight. He has a vampire's strength without the weaknesses, only the thirst for blood, which he keeps down with a serum. The film opens at an underground rave where blood pours from the sprinklers and Blade kills everyone with a sword, silver stakes and a shotgun.

A vampire burned at the rave, Quinn, wakes up in the morgue and bites hematologist Karen Jenson. Blade saves her and takes her to the hideout of Abraham Whistler, his mentor, who makes the weapons and the serum. Karen finds a hidden world: vampires control the police, the banks and the politicians, and the humans who serve them carry a tattooed mark. She tries to build a cure for the bite and starts studying Blade's blood.

The villain is Deacon Frost, a young vampire who was born human and turned. He rejects the hierarchy of pureblood vampires and wants open war on humans. Frost kills the elder Dragonetti in the sunlight and locks up the rest. Digging through ancient texts, he finds the ritual of La Magra, the blood god. To trigger it he needs twelve purebloods and the blood of the Daywalker.

Frost raids the hideout, bites Whistler and takes Karen. Blade leaves his mentor a gun, and Whistler chooses death over turning. When he storms Frost's penthouse, Blade learns the worst part: his mother, Vanessa, is alive. Frost bit her in 1967, and she became a vampire. Blade is captured and taken to the Temple of Eternal Night, where they drain his blood for the ritual.

Frost receives La Magra's power and the twelve elders die. Karen lets Blade drink her blood, and he gets his strength back. Blade kills his own mother and takes on Frost, who now heals from any blow. The answer is chemistry: Blade injects him with several doses of EDTA, an anticoagulant that makes vampire blood explode. Frost bursts. Karen offers Blade a cure, but he asks for a better serum so he can keep hunting. In the last scene, Blade is in Moscow, facing down another vampire.
