Quick recap

British spy Finn McMissile infiltrates an oil rig and learns that a gang of lemon cars is up to something involving a disguised camera. He brings Mater, who in Tokyo is mistaken for an American agent and pulled into a spy mission. With spy Holley Shiftwell, Mater learns the camera ignites the fuel. Hidden details

  1. Behind the scenesThe spy idea came from a deleted scene

Lasseter said Cars 2 came from three places, and one was an abandoned sequence from the first film that suggested a spy story. The first storyboard for the opening grew out of a deleted scene from Cars.

  2. ChangeThe Grand Prix had five races

The original idea had five races, including a 24-hour endurance race in Paris and a rally in the Black Forest. With the film running long, only three stayed: Tokyo, the fictional Porto Corsa and London. The Paris scene became a stop to meet an informant.

  3. ChangeEach country got a local driver

In international versions, driver Jeff Gorvette is replaced in dialogue scenes by local racers. Brazil gets Carla Veloso, Latin America gets Memo Rojas, Spain gets Fernando Alonso and Germany gets Sebastian Vettel.
