Quick recap

McQueen, now a seven-time Piston Cup champion, is overtaken by Jackson Storm, a rookie from a faster, tech-heavy generation. In a Los Angeles race he tries to keep up, loses control and suffers a bad crash. Four months later he decides to keep racing and trains at a high-tech center under trainer Cruz Ramirez. They clash. Mater suggests tracking down Smokey, Doc's old mentor, in Thomasville. There McQueen learns new tricks. At the Florida 500 he hands over his spot and puts Cruz on the track. Cruz beats Storm with an old Doc move. McQueen becomes Cruz's mentor.

  2. Behind the scenesAnimation and rendering at the same time

The film used a new rendering mode called RIS, already used in Finding Dory. Before, animators did the animation first and rendered later. RIS let both happen at once, which made scenes like the Crazy Eight derby possible.

  3. CameoNASCAR drivers become cars

Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Bubba Wallace and Daniel Suárez voice versions of themselves as next-gen racers: Chase Racelott, Ryan "Inside" Laney, Bubba Wheelhouse and Danny Swervez. The short Lou played before the film in theaters.
