A fire destroys the Baudelaire home and kills the parents of Violet, Klaus and Sunny. Banker Mr. Poe, who manages their inheritance, hands the three to Count Olaf, a distant relative who only cares about the fortune. Olaf makes the kids cook and clean for his troupe. Then he stages The Marvelous Marriage, a play in which Violet will marry him for real, with Justice Strauss in the cast. To make sure, he locks Sunny in a cage at the top of a tower. Violet signs the certificate with her left hand, so the marriage doesn't count. Olaf escapes when someone kills the lights and swears he'll be back. Mr. Poe won't let the judge adopt the orphans.

ChangeThe wedding moved to the end
The movie combines the first three books and pushes the wedding play to the end, after Uncle Monty and Aunt Josephine. In the book, it's Olaf's first scheme.
In the book, Violet voids the marriage by signing with her left hand, though she's right-handed. In the movie, Klaus saves the day by using the lenses in Olaf's tower to burn the certificate.
No spoilersThe easter eggs give away parts of the title. They open once you mark it as seen.
