Two years after the blasts, nuclear winter has left the world nearly sunless, and the vampires run a police state. Strong humans were wiped out, the rest enslaved, and the weakest held in blood camps. Eph has pulled away from everyone. The Master, in Bolivar's body, has taken Zack as his protégé and is grooming him to be his next host. Nora has left Eph for Fet, who works on the Occido Lumen with Quinlan. Biblical flashbacks trace the vampires to the archangel Ozryel. Eph cracks the book: the Master began on one of the Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence River. The survivors set off a nuke there, and Eph, Zack, Quinlan and the Master die. The remaining vampires crumble, and humanity starts to rebuild.
