Quick recap

Miss Marple spends a few days at Bertram's, a London hotel that seems frozen in time. She notices odd things: an absent-minded canon goes missing, some guests look too familiar and young Elvira Blake is sneaking around. Her mother, the adventurer Bess Sedgwick, is staying there too. The hotel is a front for a gang that pulls robberies using look-alikes of respectable people, and Bess is one of its leaders. On a foggy night, someone shoots at Elvira, and the doorman, Michael Gorman, dies shielding her. Bess takes the blame and dies in a car crash while fleeing. Marple and Inspector Davy know the truth: Elvira fired the shots herself.
