Quick recap
Terry McCaleb's widow asks Bosch, still a private eye, to look into her husband's death. Bosch comes to suspect that Robert Backus, the Poet, presumed dead, is back. Agent Rachel Walling, once Backus's protégé, has been exiled to South Dakota and is getting messages from him. Shut out of the official case, she and Bosch join forces. Bosch also agrees to rejoin the LAPD's cold-case unit. In the climax, they chase Backus through the flooded channels of the Los Angeles River, where he drowns. But Bosch learns McCaleb wasn't the Poet's victim: he caused his own death. The FBI hid it, and Rachel walks away.
