Quick recap

Mavis thinks her dad works too hard and books a monster cruise for the whole family. Dracula boards with Johnny, Dennis and his friends and falls in love at first sight with the ship's captain, Ericka. He has no idea she descends from Van Helsing, the monster hunter who wants to wipe them all out. The ship sails for Atlantis, where Van Helsing plans to use an object that can destroy monsters. Between dance parties, onboard games and a Kraken, Dracula tries to win Ericka over and save his family at once.

Hidden details

  1. Behind the scenesThe idea came from a miserable family vacation

Tartakovsky said in 2015 that "two is enough" and he wouldn't return. He came back later, inspired by a "miserable" family vacation and the Chevy Chase National Lampoon's Vacation movies. That is why the film is set on a cruise. The Kraken was the animators' biggest challenge.

  2. ChangeThe release date moved up two months

The film was set for September 21, 2018, but Sony moved it up to July 13 to give that date to Goosebumps 2. Before that, Amazon offered Prime members an early showing on June 30 in about 1,000 theaters. An almost complete cut was shown at Annecy.

  3. SetupThe dance floor song is by Bruno Mars

The scene where Dracula dances on the ship while Ericka tries to kill him uses Bruno Mars's "24K Magic". In another scene a fishman voiced by Chris Parnell sings a cover of "Downtown". The film went on to gross over $540 million.
