Quick recap

Grady Tucker's family trades Vermont for a house beside Fever Swamp in Florida, where his scientist dad studies South American swamp deer. Grady adopts a stray dog, Wolf. When a deer turns up dead, his dad blames the dog and plans to send him to the pound. Grady is sure there's a werewolf in the swamp, helps Wolf escape, and follows him out on a full-moon night. Near the hermit's shack, he's attacked by the werewolf: it's Will, his best friend. Wolf drives Will off, the hermit carries Grady home, and the family lets him keep the dog. Will's house is found abandoned. At the next full moon, Grady goes out hunting with Wolf, a werewolf himself now.
