Slappy

The ventriloquist dummy that comes to life

Slappy is R. L. Stine's most famous ventriloquist dummy, with a painted wooden face, a suit and a grin that fools no one. Once awake, he wants to boss around whoever woke him. He shows up in the 1995 show, both movies and the Disney+ series.

TV debut

Slappy joins the classic show in Night of the Living Dummy II. His owner is Amy, a girl who likes playing ventriloquist. Once the dummy wakes up, he starts causing trouble around the house and makes it all look like her fault. Her family won't believe her, and each prank is worse than the last.

That's where viewers meet Slappy's style: he talks like he owns the place, treats people like servants and loves a good taunt. The high-pitched voice and the cackle became a trademark of the show.

More dummies in the family

In Night of the Living Dummy III, Slappy comes back with company. He brings another dummy, Rocky, to life, and the two try to take over a whole household and turn the family into servants. The leads' cousin ends up turned into a dummy too. The two-parter makes it clear Slappy thinks big: he doesn't just want to scare people, he wants to rule them.

A bride for Slappy

Bride of the Living Dummy is Slappy's last appearance on the classic show. He strikes a deal with a failing ventriloquist and targets two sisters, planning to make the younger one his bride. Even when he seems destroyed, Slappy finds a way to stick around, this time latched onto the lead's little brother.

Leader of the monsters

In the 2015 film, Slappy is the main villain. Trapped in one of R. L. Stine's manuscripts, he breaks free and releases the other monsters from the books, whom he calls his brothers and sisters. He saves special treatment for Stine: he calls the writer Papa and wants payback for being locked up so long.

Slappy teleports, leads the invasion of Madison and only stops when Stine writes a new story to trap them all. He's voiced by Jack Black, who also plays Stine.

Slappy's Halloween

In Goosebumps 2, Sonny, Sam and Sarah open an unpublished manuscript and wake Slappy. He wants a family, and when he can't have one, he goes on the attack. On Halloween night, he uses a mask to control Walter, powers up the Wardenclyffe Tower and brings the town's decorations, costumes and even Street Fighter figures to life. He also kidnaps Kathy, Sonny and Sarah's mom.

The three beat him inside the tower. But Slappy survives, and in the last scene he traps Stine himself in a new story. This time Mick Wingert does the voice.

The sorcerer inside the dummy

The Disney+ series gives Slappy a new origin. The dummy was bought in 1925 by Ephraim, Harold Biddle's great-grandfather, to save his career as a magician. Trapped inside is the spirit of Kanduu, an evil sorcerer. In 1993, Slappy cuts Harold off from his friends and leads him to turn his parents into puppets.

Years later, the dummy's pieces come back together, and Harold ends up throwing Slappy off a cliff. But the dummy's eyes still open down below. Chris Geere voices Slappy and also plays Kanduu.

Off screen

In comics and books

In the books, Slappy debuts in Night of the Living Dummy (1993) and wakes up when someone reads aloud the words on a slip of paper in his pocket: Karru Marri Odonna Loma Molonu Karrano. He became the series' most frequent villain.
