Quick recap

Frieza reaches Earth with his father, only to be cut down by a mysterious young Super Saiyan. He's Trunks, Vegeta and Bulma's son, from a future wrecked by two androids. He warns Goku of an attack three years out and hands him medicine for a heart disease. On the day, Androids 19 and 20 appear, built by Dr. Gero. Goku falls ill, and Androids 17 and 18 are switched on and beat everyone. Cell also arrives from the future; he absorbs the androids to reach his perfect form and announces the Cell Games. Goku steps aside for Gohan, who becomes a Super Saiyan 2. Goku sacrifices himself and Gohan defeats Cell. Goku chooses to stay dead, and Trunks returns to his future.

Trivia

  1. Behind the scenesThe editor didn't like the androids

Torishima wasn't happy with the first androids, 19 and 20, as villains. That pushed Toriyama to create Cell.

  2. Behind the scenesUgly, so he changes

Editor Yū Kondō thought Cell was ugly. Toriyama hadn't planned for him to transform and added it in response. Kondō also found the second form silly and pushed for the next one.

  3. Behind the scenesOne week at a time

Toriyama struggled with this arc: he didn't think he could top Frieza, added time travel, and ended up planning the plot only a week ahead.
