Sasuke Uchiha

When Team 7 introduces themselves, Sasuke says he doesn't have a dream, just an ambition: rebuild his clan and kill a certain someone. On the Land of Waves mission, he and Naruto get trapped in Haku's ice mirrors. Mid-fight, his eyes awaken the Sharingan, the Uchiha clan's power.

When Haku goes for Naruto, Sasuke throws himself in front without thinking and goes down covered in needles. Later he wakes up alive and acts like it was nothing.

In the Chūnin Exams, Orochimaru bites Sasuke's neck and leaves him the Curse Mark. Kakashi teaches him the Chidori, and Sasuke uses it on Gaara in the finals. Soon after, Itachi shows up in the village and Sasuke rushes to face him. His brother drops him effortlessly and traps him in a nightmare that leaves him in a coma.

Healed by Tsunade, he can't stand watching Naruto get stronger. The Sound Four bring Orochimaru's offer: power in exchange for leaving the village. Sasuke walks out at night, thanks Sakura and leaves her unconscious on a bench. At the Valley of the End he fights Naruto, wins, spares his life and heads to Orochimaru.

At Orochimaru's hideout, Sasuke runs into Naruto and Sakura again, treats them like strangers and attacks his old friend. After years with Orochimaru, he defeats him, forms his own team, Hebi, and goes after Itachi. They clash at the Uchiha hideout, Sharingan against Sharingan, until Itachi's Susanoo seals away what was left of Orochimaru. Out of strength, Itachi reaches his brother, taps his forehead with two fingers and falls dead.

Sasuke wakes up in Tobi's hands, and Tobi tells another version of the massacre: Itachi was following the Leaf leaders' orders and protected his brother to the end. Sasuke awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan, renames his team Taka and turns his hatred on the village.

After capturing Killer Bee for the Akatsuki, Sasuke becomes a target of the Cloud Village. He storms the Five Kage Summit in the Land of Iron looking for Danzō, the elder who ordered Itachi to kill the clan, and takes on the Raikage and the others with Susanoo. Then he kills Danzō.

Using the Mangekyō takes its toll, and his sight starts to fail. Sakura goes after him alone, set on ending him, and Sasuke nearly kills her before Kakashi steps in.

With Itachi's eyes transplanted, Sasuke gains the Eternal Mangekyō. In the war he meets his brother again, brought back by the Reanimation Jutsu, and the two fight side by side against Kabuto. Before he goes, Itachi tells Sasuke he doesn't have to forgive him and that he will always love him.

Sasuke brings back the former Hokage to hear the truth about the Leaf. By the end, he decides to protect the village his brother protected and announces he wants to be Hokage. He reaches the battlefield and fights alongside Naruto and Sakura again.

Madara nearly kills Sasuke, but Hagoromo, the Sage of Six Paths, saves him and gives him half his power. Sasuke awakens the Rinnegan and, with Naruto, seals Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. Right after, he reveals his real plan: kill the Kage, carry the world's hatred alone and become the only Hokage.

Naruto faces him at the Valley of the End. Each loses an arm, and Sasuke finally admits defeat and cries. Pardoned, he sets out on a journey to see the world and atone, carrying the old headband Naruto kept for him. Sakura asks to come along; he says no, but their goodbye gives her more hope than ever.

Masashi Kishimoto created Sasuke after his editor asked for a rival for Naruto, and designed him as the hero's opposite: a cool genius who doesn't show his feelings. Kishimoto has said he drew on his relationship with his twin brother, fellow manga artist Seishi Kishimoto, and that Sasuke was one of the hardest characters to draw every week.
