Quellcrist Falconer

The leader of the Envoys

Quellcrist Falconer, Quell for short, is a scientist and the leader of the Envoys, the rebels fighting the Protectorate. She teaches Kovacs to fight and think like an Envoy, and the two fall in love. Centuries later, her name is still a legend.

Altered Carbon – Season 1

The creator's guilt

In S1's flashbacks, Quell tells Kovacs she helped create the technology that stores minds in stacks. She watched the rich use it to live forever and began fighting to end immortality, leading the Envoys. The Envoys learn to adapt to any body and any place, and Quell is the one who teaches that way of thinking.

Teacher and lover

Quell trains Kovacs after he switches sides, and the two become a couple. When the Envoys are massacred, she's shot and seems to die. In S1 she comes back to Kovacs as a memory, and only at the end does word surface that a copy of her might exist.

The founders' killer

In S2, thirty years later, Quell is alive on Harlan's World but doesn't recognize herself. She's killing the planet's founders one by one without knowing why. Each time, she acts as if someone else were guiding her hand. In episode 3, after Kovacs is thrown into a televised arena, she escapes with him, with help from Poe and the AI Dig 301. In episode 4, she destroys the transfer point that would have gotten the group off the planet. Bit by bit, she gets her memories back and leads the group to a long-buried secret.

Two in one body

In episode 7, Quell learns she shares her body with the consciousness of an Elder, an ancient being out for revenge on the founders. Her body starts breaking down. Renée Elise Goldsberry nicknamed this version Quellder. In the home stretch, Quell confronts Governor Danica Harlan and decides to pull the Elder's consciousness into her own stack, to control it and save the orbitals that protect the planet. She puts the mission ahead of the romance. In the end, Kovacs dies in her place, and Quell survives to keep fighting and look for a new world.

In comics and books

In Richard K. Morgan's books, Quell is a legendary revolutionary from Harlan's World with a big role in Woken Furies. The show folded in traits from other characters, like Virginia Vidaura, Kovacs's instructor in the book. Renée Elise Goldsberry plays her in both seasons.
