Aslan

The great lion, son of the Emperor-beyond-the-Sea

Aslan is the great lion of Narnia. No one gives him orders, and he shows up when he chooses, not when he's called. Where he walks, the ice melts. The talking animals and forest creatures treat him as their king, and even the White Witch fears him.

Aslan is on the move

After a hundred years of winter, word spreads that Aslan is back. The ice starts to melt and Father Christmas shows up again. The Beavers lead Peter, Susan and Lucy to his camp near the Stone Table. Aslan welcomes them as the kings and queens the prophecy promised, and his soldiers rescue Edmund from the Witch's camp.

The Stone Table

The Witch invokes an old law: every traitor belongs to her. Aslan makes a secret deal and gives himself up in Edmund's place. Susan and Lucy watch from hiding as he's bound, shorn and killed on the Stone Table.

At dawn the table cracks and Aslan is alive. There's a deeper magic than the Witch's: when an innocent dies for a traitor, death itself turns back. He breathes on the statues in her castle, brings everyone back and reaches the battle in time to finish off the Witch.

Those who believe see him

Thirteen hundred years later, no one in Narnia has seen Aslan in centuries. Lucy spots him on a hillside, but her siblings don't believe her, and the group takes the wrong path. She finds him again in the woods, alone. He tells her he looks bigger now because she has grown. In the end, Aslan wakes the trees and the river god, and the Telmarine army flees across the bridge.

At the end of the world

On Dragon Island, Aslan peels away Eustace's dragon skin and makes him a boy again. At the end of the voyage, he waits for Edmund, Lucy and Eustace on a beach past the last wave. He tells the siblings they won't come back to Narnia and that he exists in their world too, under another name. That's where they must learn to know him.

The four signs

In the BBC's The Silver Chair, Jill shows off at the edge of a cliff in Aslan's Country, and Eustace falls trying to pull her back. Aslan blows the boy to Narnia and gives Jill four signs to find Prince Rilian. She has to repeat them every day, because Narnia's air muddles the memory. In the end, Aslan brings the children back to his mountain, where old King Caspian's body lies in a stream. A drop of the lion's blood brings Caspian back young.
