Alan Parrish

The boy who spent 26 years trapped in the game

Alan is the son of the man who owns Brantford's shoe factory. Timid and picked on by the town bullies, he keeps clashing with his father. A board game he stumbles on changes his life for good.

Jumanji

The Brantford kid

In 1969, Alan gets beaten up by bullies and lives in fear of letting down his father, Sam Parrish. Running from the boys, he hears drums at a construction site and digs up a board game called Jumanji.

That same day, Alan leaves a prototype sneaker on the factory belt, the machine breaks and worker Carl Bentley takes the blame and loses his job. That night Alan fights with his father, who wants to send him to boarding school, and thinks about running away.

Pulled into the jungle

Alan starts playing with his friend Sarah Whittle. On his turn, the game tells him to wait in the jungle until someone rolls a five or an eight, and he vanishes into the board. Sarah runs off, chased by bats.

Alan spends 26 years alone in the jungle of Jumanji, dodging the hunter Van Pelt.

Back, but too late

In 1995, siblings Judy and Peter play and roll the right number. Alan comes out a grown man, bearded and dressed in leaves. He learns his parents are dead and the factory has closed.

To undo the damage, he has to finish the game. Alan tracks down Sarah, now a traumatized woman, and the four of them play while the jungle takes over the town and Van Pelt hunts him again.

Every roll lets loose a new danger: giant mosquitoes, a stampede, a monsoon inside the house. Out in town, Alan runs into Carl Bentley, now a police officer, and sees what his disappearance cost Brantford.

The last move

Alan stops running and faces Van Pelt. At the right moment he reaches the end of the board and says "Jumanji." Everything gets pulled back in, and he and Sarah wake up as kids in 1969.

Alan makes peace with his father and remembers it all. Years later, married to Sarah, he meets Judy and Peter's parents and changes their fate.

What he left behind

Alan doesn't appear in the video game era, but his mark is still there. The hideout where Alex Vreeke takes shelter inside the game was built by Alan, who carved his name into the wood.
