Cristian Mungiu's Fjord takes a mixed family to a remote corner of Norway. Mihai Gheorghiu is Romanian. His wife, Lisbet, is Norwegian. With their kids, they leave their old life behind and move to the village where she was born, a place of mountains and icy water.
At first, the move seems to work. The Gheorghius make friends with the family next door, the Halbergs. Mats, the father in that house, runs the local school, and the children of both families start spending their days together.
Then a suspicion takes hold. Someone sees something odd in the way Mihai and Lisbet raise their children, and the family comes under close watch. The fresh start turns into a clash with the system, a family drama that moves like a courtroom thriller.
Mungiu points his camera at a society proud of its tolerance that stumbles when someone steps outside the expected norms. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve play the couple at the center of the storm.
Inspired by the real-life case of the Bodnariu family
