Minotaur marks Andrey Zvyagintsev's return after years without a film. The story is set in 2022, in a small provincial town in Russia, with the war in Ukraine humming in the background.
Gleb is an executive watching his company go under. He is about to lay off his staff when another blow lands, this time at home: his wife, Galina, is having an affair.
From there, the film squeezes him from two sides. On one, the business and politics of a town where everyone knows everyone and nobody says what they think. On the other, a marriage cracking without a sound. Zvyagintsev borrows the setup of a Claude Chabrol classic and drops it into present-day Russia.
Fans of Leviathan and Loveless will recognize the director's cold gaze, once again paired with cinematographer Mikhail Krichman. Critics reached for Hitchcock comparisons. Dmitriy Mazurov and Iris Lebedeva play the couple.
Based on Claude Chabrol's 1969 film La Femme infidèle (The Unfaithful Wife)
