A Man of His Time (original title Notre salut, "Our Salvation") opens in 1940. France has just fallen to Germany, and the collaborationist government sets up shop in Vichy, a spa town that becomes a capital overnight.
That is where Henri Marre heads. Under his arm is a manuscript called, fittingly, Notre salut, and he is sure those pages can rescue France. He wants it published and wants the people in charge to listen.
To get there, Henri throws himself into serving the new regime. The film follows this ordinary man, full of certainty, as he tries to climb the Vichy machine, with his wife, Paulette, nearby.
Henri is fictional, but Emmanuel Marre drew on his own great-grandfather, who worked in the 1940s for an unemployment agency office in Limoges. Swann Arlaud plays the lead in a period drama shot with small, nimble digital cameras.
Lead character inspired by the director's great-grandfather
