Dreams (Sex Love) centers on Johanne, a 17-year-old girl in Oslo. She lives with her mother, Kristin, and is very close to her grandmother, Karin, a published author. After reading a novel about an affair between a student and a teacher, Johanne falls hard for her new French teacher, Johanna.
Little by little, the two spend more time together. There are knitting lessons at the teacher's apartment, long talks and a closeness Johanne treasures like a secret. To make sense of what she feels, she writes. The result is an autobiographical text of almost 200 pages, full of longing and of scenes that may or may not have happened.
The manuscript reaches her grandmother first, who passes it on to her mother. The two read it, argue and cannot decide what to make of it. Is it literature or a confession? Was there abuse, or is it a teenager's imagination? Dag Johan Haugerud tells it all with plenty of voiceover and long conversations, and leaves the audience as unsure as the family.
