The Blue Trail is set in a near-future Brazil. To keep the economy moving, the government builds remote colonies where older people are sent to live. The idea is to get them out of the way and let the young work in peace.
Tereza is 77 and lives in a town in the Amazon. She does not feel ready to be pushed aside. But the cutoff age for relocation is suddenly lowered, and she lands on the list. She has only a few days before she is taken away.
Before that, Tereza decides to fulfill an old wish: to fly on a plane for the first time. But older people now need permission for almost everything, and her request is denied. Refusing to take no for an answer, she sneaks onto a boat and travels along the region's rivers. Along the way she meets all kinds of people, among them Cadu and Roberta. Gabriel Mascaro mixes social satire, river adventure and a touch of magical realism.
