Biography

Shannon Messenger was born on November 10, 1981, in Southern California, and spent her childhood in San Diego. She studied at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, one of the best-known film schools in the United States. That background shows in how she writes: visual scenes, lots of dialogue and chapters that end begging for the next one.

Her debut came on October 2, 2012, with Keeper of the Lost Cities, published by Aladdin, Simon & Schuster's imprint for young readers. Sophie Foster is 12, already a high school senior after skipping grades, and has heard other people's thoughts since she was little. One day a mysterious boy tells her she's an elf and brings her to the Lost Cities, a hidden world where she'll go to school, make friends and learn that her past holds secrets. The mix of magic school, tight friendships and a long-game mystery won over readers aged roughly 10 to 14, and the series reached the New York Times bestseller list.

The very next year, Messenger proved she could run two series at once. In 2013 she released both Exile, the second Keeper book, and Let the Sky Fall, which opens the young adult Sky Fall trilogy. In it, a boy who survived a tornado discovers a bond with the winds and with the guardian sworn to protect him. The trilogy continued with Let the Storm Break (2014) and wrapped with Let the Wind Rise (2016), aimed at slightly older readers than Keeper.

Keeper, though, became the heart of her career. Everblaze (2014), Neverseen (2015), Lodestar (2016), Nightfall (2017), Flashback (2018) and Legacy (2019) arrived almost every November, one a year, and kept getting thicker: the first runs about 500 pages in the U.S. hardcover, while Flashback tops 840. Fans rallied around the ships, the theories and the rebel group Black Swan, and the author started feeding that community with extra books. Unlocked (2020), book 8.5, pairs a guide to the elvin world, complete with recipes and a map, with a new novella, and it reached number 8 on the USA Today list.

In 2017, the first book won the California Young Reader Medal in the middle school category, an award picked by student votes. Stellarlune, book 9, came out in November 2022, and Unraveled, book 9.5, told entirely from Keefe's point of view, followed in December 2024. In November 2025 she announced Elysian as the series finale, slated for 2027.

Keeper is about belonging, identity and the weight of being special in a world with strict rules about who matters more. Sophie is powerful, but she makes mistakes, doubts herself and leans on her friends, which explains the strong bond with readers who grew up with the series.

Hollywood came calling early. In January 2021, Disney announced a film with Ben Affleck set to direct. In April 2024, Warner Bros. picked up the rights, with Emma Watts producing and Messenger herself as executive producer. As of October 2026, no adaptation has been released. In Spanish, the first two books came out as La guardiana de las ciudades perdidas and El secreto de la alicornia mágica; there is still no Brazilian edition.
