Biography

Kiera Cass was born on May 19, 1981, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and grew up in that same beach town. She graduated from Socastee High School, started college at Coastal Carolina University and transferred to Radford University in Virginia, where she earned a degree in history.

Her debut took the most independent route there is. In 2009, Cass self-published The Siren, about a girl saved from drowning who ends up serving the Ocean itself as a siren. It didn't reach many readers at the time, but it gave her real practice and a first small audience of her own. Soon she was working on a very different idea, a mix of fairy tale and reality TV.

That idea became The Selection, published by HarperTeen in 2012. In a future country split into numbered castes, 35 girls are picked to compete for the crown prince's hand, and the narrator, America Singer, enters with zero interest in winning. Comparisons to The Hunger Games showed up right away, but the mood is different: fewer arenas and more ball gowns, less fighting and more palace politics, with a love triangle at the center.

America's trilogy wrapped with The Elite (2013) and The One (2014). Readers wanted more, and Cass answered in two ways. First came novellas told by other characters, including the prince himself and the guard Aspen, later collected in Happily Ever After (2015). Then she jumped 20 years ahead: The Heir (2015) and The Crown (2016) follow America's daughter through a new Selection, this time with young men competing for the princess.

Her style is direct and built for binge reading. The chapters are short, the narration is in first person and the dialogue keeps the pages turning. Under the romance, the books deal with class, with who gets a voice under a regime that controls everything, and with how a public image can become a weapon. For many readers, the series was a first step into young adult fantasy.

Hollywood tried to bring the series to the screen more than once. The CW shot two pilots, in 2012 and 2013, and passed on both. Warner Bros. bought the film rights in 2015, Netflix announced a movie in 2020 and dropped it in 2023. To this day, The Selection lives only on the page.

After the series, Cass rewrote The Siren, which HarperTeen reissued in January 2016. In 2020 she opened another royal court story with The Betrothed, a number one New York Times bestseller, followed by The Betrayed in 2021. In 2022 she released A Thousand Heartbeats, a fantasy romance about a forbidden love between kingdoms at war. Cass has been married since 2004 and has two children, a son and a daughter.
