Quick recap

The Surprise chases the American privateer Franklin across the South Pacific until an undersea volcanic eruption knocks her out. Jack takes the ship and her owner, Jean Dutourd, an idealist who dreamed of founding a utopian colony. At Callao, Stephen starts a secret mission backing Peru's independence movement. It collapses, and he flees over the Andes toward Chile, crossing a blizzard that costs him several toes. Near Cape Horn, an American frigate chases the Surprise into an ice field, where the frigate gets trapped. HMS Berenice arrives with supplies, and the two friends head home.
