Quick recap

Home in England after sailing around the world, Jack is made commodore and given a squadron to strike the slave trade off West Africa. Stephen finds his daughter, Brigid, in Clarissa Oakes's care, but can't find Diana. Threatened by the Duke of Habachtsthal, he moves his fortune and household to Spain. In Africa, Jack's squadron surprises slave ports, frees more than 6,000 captives and takes 18 ships. The squadron then sails for Ireland to meet a French force near Bantry Bay and wins, though several ships are badly damaged. Ashore, Stephen learns the duke has killed himself and is reunited with Diana.
