Quick recap

About 30 years later, Kovacs fights as a mercenary in Carrera's Wedge on Sanction IV, a planet in civil war. Pilot Jan Schneider brings him in on a scheme: claim a buried Martian gate that leads to a starship. The two break archaeologue Tanya Wardani out of a prison camp, and Kovacs sells the plan to the Mandrake Corporation. A leak from Mandrake leads the rebels to nuke the city of Sauberville, clearing the site. Inside the ship they find the bodies of the original dig team: Wardani sabotaged them when she learned they wanted to turn the ship into a weapon. Kovacs trades the rights to the ship for a way out of the system for the survivors.
