Sydney, now studying magic, keeps protecting Jill while carrying on a forbidden romance with Adrian. Her younger sister Zoe arrives in Palm Springs, and Sydney has to hide everything from her. The witch Inez tells her the Strigoi couldn't drink her blood because she had used magic, which inspires Sydney to recreate a tattoo that can break the Alchemists' golden lily. Adrian, who now narrates half the chapters, struggles with spirit and starts drinking again. Some of his old friends attack Sydney. In the end, a blizzard leaves Sydney in the hands of the Alchemists, who find out about the romance and send her to re-education.
