One Thursday, Arthur Dent's house is about to be demolished, and so is the whole Earth: the Vogons need room for a hyperspace bypass. Ford Prefect, an alien researcher for the Guide, saves his friend by hitching a ride on the Vogon ship. Thrown into space, the two are rescued by the Heart of Gold, stolen by Zaphod Beeblebrox, President of the Galaxy, who travels with Trillian and Marvin, the depressed robot. On Magrathea, Slartibartfast explains that Earth was a giant computer built to find the Ultimate Question, since Deep Thought's answer was 42. The mice who commissioned Earth want Arthur's brain. The group escapes and decides to grab dinner at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

ChangeHumma Kavula is a movie invention
The religious leader played by John Malkovich isn't in the book. He and the stop on Viltvodle VI were created for the film, from an idea by Douglas Adams.
In the film, the Vogons capture Trillian and the group goes to get her back on their homeworld, braving the bureaucracy line. That trip isn't in the book.
In the book, Arthur and Trillian are barely more than people who met at a party. The film makes them a couple and borrows ideas from another book in the series to do it.
