Quick recap

For three days, the Union army and Black Dow's Northmen fight over a worthless hill topped with a ring of ancient stones, the Heroes. The story moves between sides: Curnden Craw, a Northern veteran who just wants to do the right thing; Bremer dan Gorst, a disgraced royal guard who only feels alive in a fight; Prince Calder, cowardly and clever; and Finree dan Brock, a general's daughter more ambitious than her husband. The battle swings back and forth, and courage is almost never rewarded. In the end, no side really wins. A peace deal ends the fighting, Calder comes out on top in the North and Craw puts down his weapons.
