Monza Murcatto, a mercenary general working for Duke Orso of Talins, is betrayed by him: her brother Benna is killed and she is thrown off a mountain. Monza survives, broken, and swears to kill the seven men who were in the room. She puts together an unlikely crew: Shivers, a Northman trying to be a better man, a vain poisoner and his apprentice, an ex-convict obsessed with numbers and the old mercenary Nicomo Cosca. One by one, the targets fall across war-torn Styria, and every killing costs someone around her. Shivers ends up far crueler than he started. In the end, Monza kills Orso and takes Talins, but sees that bigger powers are still moving the pieces.
