Duarte wakes up able to project his mind into others and vanishes. Colonel Tanaka hunts him, using Teresa as bait. Elvi uncovers the history of the gate builders, a hive mind faster than light, while the Rocinante crew dodges Laconian forces. Duarte proposes turning humanity into a hive mind to fight them and starts taking over crews. Holden injects himself with the protomolecule and, with Miller's help, gets into the Ring Station. Tanaka kills Duarte. Once the ships are clear, Holden destroys the station and sacrifices himself, closing the gates. In the epilogue, a thousand years later, Amos greets visitors on Earth.
