Quick recap

After Blaine, the group reaches an empty Topeka wiped out by a plague. Around the campfire, Roland tells them about his youth. At 14, having won his guns, he's sent with his friends Alain and Cuthbert to Hambry, in the Barony of Mejis. There he falls for Susan Delgado, promised to the mayor as a mistress, and learns the town is supplying John Farson, Gilead's enemy. The witch Rhea becomes obsessed with a magic glass ball. The boys are jailed, Susan frees them and they destroy Farson's oil tankers. Through the glass, Roland watches Susan burn at the stake. Back in the present, the group reaches an emerald palace whose wizard is Marten, also called Randall Flagg. He escapes, and the group stays with Roland.

The empty Topeka the group finds was wiped out by Captain Trips, the same superflu from The Stand. Graffiti mentions "the walking dude", Randall Flagg's nickname in that book.
