Quick recap

Hours after book 1, Roland wakes on a beach and is attacked by a lobstrosity that takes two of his fingers. Feverish, he finds three doors into New York in different eras. The first brings Eddie Dean, a heroin addict running cocaine for mob boss Balazar; after a shootout in which Eddie's brother dies, Eddie stays with Roland. The second brings Odetta Holmes, an activist who lost her legs and shares her body with the vicious Detta Walker. The third puts Roland inside Jack Mort, the man who pushed both Odetta and Jake toward death. Roland stops Mort from killing Jake and sends him under a subway train. Seeing it, Odetta and Detta merge into Susannah, who saves Eddie. The three move on together.
