Quick recap

Spain, 1813. Sharpe is sent after deserters and gets tangled up with the Nugent family on the way. Ellie Nugent's father disappears while searching for Aztec treasure hidden in the area, and Sharpe goes after him. The film only borrows the 1981 novel's title: the book is about Spanish gold at Almeida in 1810, and TV invents a new adventure, with partisans, gold everyone wants and the loyalty of Sharpe's men put to the test.

Hidden details

  1. ReferenceA different gold

The book is about Spanish gold to fund the war, near Almeida, in 1810. The film keeps the title and tells a different story, with Aztec treasure.

  2. ReferenceOut of order

Gold was the second book published, but TV made it after Honour. That's why the film is set in 1813, three years after the novel.

  3. Behind the scenesThe hardest book

Bernard Cornwell wrote Sharpe's Gold as a warm-up for the series and called it the hardest book he ever wrote.
