Quick recap

August 1810. Wellington needs a hoard of Spanish gold to keep fighting, and it's in the hands of El Católico's partisans, who torture French prisoners. Sharpe is sent for it with Major Kearsey. He meets Teresa Moreno, El Católico's fiancée, and falls for her. Suspicious, he digs up a fresh grave at night and, with Harper, finds the gold under a dung heap. Sharpe takes Teresa hostage and runs with the gold. She tells him El Católico murdered Captain Hardy. At Almeida, Brigadier Cox orders the gold handed over. Sharpe kills El Católico in a duel and plans to blow the magazine, but a French shell does it first. Almeida falls, and Sharpe escapes with the gold.

The 1995 film barely resembles the book. The Spanish gold of Almeida becomes Aztec treasure, and the whole story changes.
